10 dead as Navy Burns down Police station in Cross River state

No fewer than 10 people have been killed at the Akim Divisional Headquarter Police station in Cross River state because of clash between police and the Navy which happened on Tuesday 30th may 2017.

A police man who escape with his life told daily sun that the police station was burnt to the ground. According to him, it all started when a  Traffic warden at the Traffic light near the Calabar Stadium tried to caution a Navy guy going against Traffic rule. The Naval guy became furious and ordered his boys to beat up the Traffic Warden. 

While the Navy men were beating the Traffic Warden, a police Deputy Superintendent who was passing by begged the Navy men to stop so they can settle the problem but instead the Navy men also pounced on him.

The DSP then called for Backup,  the Navy also reinforced, but the state Navy commander and Police Commissioner intervened. However around 8 pm, the Naval officers descended on Akim Divisional Headquarter Police station, Started shooting everyone on sight and also Burnt down the building. 

The Police who escaped said

 “10 persons were killed. I know of three policemen who were confirmed dead. Many suspects in the cell died in the inferno. I narrowly escaped death. Few of us who took to our heels survived but many others sustained injuries of varying degrees. 

Another witness, John Bolus said:

It was like a war-torn zone. I thought it was another civil war. I was hearing the cacophony of gun shots and I took to my heels. I think the government should do something about it. The Navy should submit to the constitution.”
